Roofing Measurement & Waste Guide

Roofing is one of the easiest projects to underestimate from floor-plan area alone. Roof pitch, hips, valleys, dormers, starter courses and cuts can all change the material requirement.

Start with roof area, not house area

A sloped roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint. Measure roof planes directly when it is safe to do so, or use reliable plan/measurement data. Never climb a roof solely to improve an online estimate.

Understand roofing squares

In U.S. roofing, one roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof area. Our roofing calculator converts area into squares and the shingle calculator helps translate that into bundles using editable assumptions.

Waste is project-specific

A simple gable roof generally produces fewer cuts than a roof with many hips, valleys and penetrations. Treat waste as a planning variable rather than a universal percentage. Manufacturer takeoff services may account for pitch, valleys and suggested waste in a detailed bill of materials.

Do not forget non-shingle materials

A complete roofing purchase can also include underlayment, flashing, drip edge, ridge products, ventilation and fasteners. The calculator intentionally does not pretend those quantities are identical for every roof system.
