Flooring Calculator
Estimate flooring boxes, waste allowance, underlayment rolls and basic material cost for a rectangular room.
Project & product
Estimate
Flooring includes the selected waste allowance. Underlayment is calculated from the net room area because the correct overlap and installation rules depend on the product.
How flooring quantity is estimated
Multiply room length by room width to find the net area. Add waste, divide by the coverage per box, and round up to the next whole box.
Worked example
Why package coverage matters
Two flooring products can have the same board dimensions but different box coverage. Enter the coverage printed on the specific product packaging rather than relying on a generic default.
Flooring calculator FAQ
Is 10% waste always enough?
No. The correct amount depends on room shape, board or plank dimensions, installation direction and pattern. Use a waste percentage appropriate for the actual project.
Does the calculator include transitions and trim?
No. Thresholds, trim, baseboards, stair parts and adhesives are separate materials.
Why is underlayment based on net area?
This provides a simple planning estimate without assuming a specific overlap or seam requirement. Follow the underlayment manufacturer's instructions.
