Flooring includes the selected waste allowance. Underlayment is calculated from the net room area because the correct overlap and installation rules depend on the product.

How flooring quantity is estimated

Multiply room length by room width to find the net area. Add waste, divide by the coverage per box, and round up to the next whole box.

boxes = room area × (1 + waste %) ÷ box coverage

Worked example

A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 ft². With 10% waste, the purchase target is 198 ft². If one box covers 22.5 ft², the calculator rounds 8.8 boxes up to 9 boxes.

Why package coverage matters

Two flooring products can have the same board dimensions but different box coverage. Enter the coverage printed on the specific product packaging rather than relying on a generic default.
