How tile quantity is estimated

The calculator finds the project area in square feet, converts one tile's dimensions from square inches to square feet, then divides the project area by the tile area.

tiles = project area(ft²) ÷ tile area(ft²)

Waste is applied after the base tile quantity is calculated. The final tile count is then converted to full boxes because flooring products are normally purchased by the box.

Worked example

A 12 ft × 10 ft area is 120 ft². With 12 × 12 in tiles, the base requirement is 120 tiles. A 10% waste allowance brings that to 132 tiles. At 12 tiles per box, the purchase quantity is 11 boxes.

What waste percentage should I use?

Simple straight layouts usually need less extra material than diagonal patterns, complicated cuts or irregular rooms. Use a percentage that reflects your actual layout rather than treating the default as a rule.

Does grout joint width reduce the number of tiles I need?

This calculator does not treat grout width as extra tile coverage. Purchase quantity is based on tile face dimensions plus the selected waste allowance.

Why does the calculator round boxes up?

You usually cannot buy a fraction of a sealed box, so the estimate rounds the final package count upward.

Should I keep leftover tile?

Keeping a small amount from the same production run can be useful for future repairs, but the appropriate amount depends on the project and product.
