80-lb Bags vs Ready-Mix Concrete: A Quantity-First Comparison

Bagged concrete and ready-mix solve the same volume problem but have very different labor and logistics. The break-even point depends on local prices, delivery minimums and your ability to mix and place continuously.

1. Measurements used in this example

Start with required ft³ or yd³; then use the bag yield printed by the manufacturer. Write measurements down before opening a calculator. The purpose of the example is to make every assumption visible so you can replace it with your own project numbers.

2. Work the quantity before the price

Example only: if an 80-lb bag yields about 0.60 ft³, one cubic yard (27 ft³) takes about 45 bags before waste. Two cubic yards would be about 90 bags before allowance. Verify the current product label.

These numbers are planning quantities, not a contractor quote or structural design. Site conditions, local code, product specifications and supplier policies can change the final purchase.

Compare total delivered cost, number of batches, mixer capacity, placement time and crew size. Ready-mix can reduce batching work; bags can be practical for small or remote placements.
