2,000 Sq Ft Roof: Shingle Quantity Planning Example

Roofing material is commonly planned from roof surface area, not house floor area. A 2,000 sq ft measured roof equals 20 roofing squares before waste.

1. Measurements used in this example

Measured roof surface: 2,000 sq ft. Write measurements down before opening a calculator. The purpose of the example is to make every assumption visible so you can replace it with your own project numbers.

2. Work the quantity before the price

Worked arithmetic

2,000 ÷ 100 = 20 squares. At 10% waste, plan 22 squares. Bundle count depends on the exact shingle product and coverage printed by the manufacturer.

These numbers are planning quantities, not a contractor quote or structural design. Site conditions, local code, product specifications and supplier policies can change the final purchase.

3. Turn the result into a purchase plan

Verify starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment, flashing, drip edge, vents and fasteners separately. Product packaging and manufacturer instructions control actual bundle coverage.
