Roofing shingles

Roofing Shingle Calculator

Estimate roofing squares and shingle bundles using roof area, waste and bundles per square.

Estimate

Planning estimate only. Verify product dimensions, manufacturer coverage, local requirements and field conditions before purchasing.

How shingle quantity is estimated

Roof area with waste is divided by 100 square feet to get roofing squares, then multiplied by the bundles-per-square value you enter.

bundles = roof area with waste ÷ 100 × bundles per square

Roofing Shingle planning guide

Shingle planning starts with measured roof area and converts it to roofing squares, then adds material for cuts and layout. Valleys, hips, ridges and complex roof shapes can increase waste, so verify bundle coverage for the selected shingle and account separately for ridge caps, starter material and accessories.

Turning the estimate into an order

Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into whole bundles and squares for the selected shingle line. Before ordering, verify roof-plane area, bundle coverage, waste pattern and starter/ridge requirements. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.

What changes the field quantity

Valleys, hips, dormers and steep roofs create more cuts than a simple gable. Starter strips and ridge-cap products may be separate from the field shingles.

Handling a non-rectangular project

Measure each roof plane rather than relying only on the house footprint. Add the plane areas, apply a waste allowance suited to roof complexity, then calculate starter and ridge materials separately.

Mistakes worth checking

Roofing Shingle Calculator FAQ

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.

Do all shingles use 3 bundles per square?

No. Check the product packaging because bundle coverage varies.

Does this include ridge caps?

No. Ridge-cap and starter materials should be estimated separately.

Roofing Shingles ordering notes

Verify bundle coverage on the wrapper for the exact shingle product. Order field shingles by full bundles, then estimate starter and ridge-cap products separately. Keep matching lot availability in mind when adding a small repair reserve.

Use the calculator result as a planning quantity, then compare it with the packaging, minimum order, delivery rules and technical data for the exact roofing shingles you intend to use. Where drawings, codes or manufacturer instructions conflict with a general estimate, follow the project-specific requirement.
