Soil Calculator

Estimate cubic yards of soil for garden beds, lawn repair and landscape fill.

Estimate

Volume
Cubic feet

Planning estimate only. Verify product dimensions, manufacturer coverage, local requirements and field conditions before purchasing.

How soil volume is calculated

Multiply length, width and depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards.

cubic yards = length × width × depth(ft) ÷ 27

Settling and compaction can change the final quantity needed.

Soil planning guide

Soil volume is driven by the area being filled and the finished depth, but delivered soil can settle or compact after placement. Break irregular beds into simple shapes, measure depth realistically and ask the supplier how the chosen topsoil or fill is sold so the cubic-yard estimate matches local delivery increments.

Turning the estimate into an order

Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into cubic yards or whole bags. Before ordering, verify area, settled depth and the supplier’s selling unit. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.

What changes the field quantity

Loose soil settles after spreading, and screened topsoil, compost blends and garden mixes have different densities. Existing grade may also require varying depth across the site.

Handling a non-rectangular project

Divide beds or grading areas into zones with similar target depth. Calculate deep low spots separately from thin top-dressing areas rather than applying one average depth to the whole site.

Mistakes worth checking

Soil Calculator FAQ

Can I use this for raised beds?

Yes, if the bed can be approximated as a rectangular volume.

Should I account for settling?

Yes. Freshly placed soil can settle, so a small allowance may be appropriate.

Can I use this for compost?

Yes. The same volume calculation works for compost and similar bulk landscape materials.

Soil ordering notes

For bulk delivery, order by cubic yard and ask the supplier about minimum loads and typical settlement. For bagged products, convert using the exact bag volume. Compost-rich mixes may be selected by purpose rather than by density alone.

Use the calculator result as a planning quantity, then compare it with the packaging, minimum order, delivery rules and technical data for the exact soil you intend to use. Where drawings, codes or manufacturer instructions conflict with a general estimate, follow the project-specific requirement.

How to use this soil estimate in a real project

Estimate soil or topsoil volume for beds and grade changes from area and average depth, then convert to bags or bulk yards.

Average depthFor uneven fills, take several depth measurements and use a realistic average.
SettlementLoose soil may settle after watering and compaction.
Existing gradeLarge grading changes can affect drainage; quantity math alone does not establish a safe finished grade.
Bulk vs bagsCompare total volume, delivery minimums and access before choosing packaging.

Worked planning check: 300 ft² bed with 4 in added soil

300 × (4/12) = 100 ft³ = 3.70 yd³ before allowance for settlement or irregular grade.
