How roofing quantity is estimated

For a simple gable roof, footprint area is adjusted by a slope factor based on roof pitch. Waste is then added and the result is converted to roofing squares.

roof area = footprint area × slope factor × (1 + waste %)

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Bundle counts vary by product, so bundles per square is editable.

Roof material quantities depend on the actual roof planes, pitch and complexity rather than a simple building footprint. Measure or derive each plane carefully, combine the areas and choose a waste allowance that reflects valleys, hips and cuts; verify package coverage and accessory needs before ordering.

Turning the estimate into an order

Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into squares, rolls or panels according to the chosen roof system. Before ordering, verify true roof-plane area, pitch, laps and manufacturer coverage. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.

What changes the field quantity

Roof geometry matters more than footprint alone. Hips, valleys, dormers, eaves, ridges and side/end laps can all add material beyond the basic plane area.

Handling a non-rectangular project

Break the roof into individual planes and calculate each plane from measured or plan dimensions. Combine their areas before applying system-specific waste, then estimate ridge, hip, valley and flashing materials separately.

Does this work for hips, valleys or dormers?

Use it only as a rough starting point. Complex roof geometry should be measured by individual roof planes.

Why is pitch needed?

A sloped roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint.

Worked planning check: 2,000 ft² measured roof area

2,000 ÷ 100 = 20 squares before waste. With 10% planning waste, the material target becomes 22 squares. Convert that figure into bundles using the exact product’s stated coverage.
