Mulch Calculator
Estimate bulk mulch volume or bag quantity from bed area and desired depth.

Estimate
Planning estimate only. Confirm product dimensions, package coverage and project requirements before purchasing.
How mulch quantity is estimated
Bed area is multiplied by mulch depth to get volume. The calculator shows cubic yards for bulk orders and bags based on package volume.
Mulch planning guide
Mulch estimates are sensitive to bed area and finished depth: adding even an inch across a large bed can change the order noticeably. Measure irregular beds in smaller sections, choose a depth appropriate to the landscaping goal, and compare cubic-yard results with the bag volume or bulk-delivery increments offered locally.
Turning the estimate into an order
Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into cubic yards or whole bags. Before ordering, verify bed area, finished depth and bag volume. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.
What changes the field quantity
Mulch settles after placement and existing mulch may reduce the depth actually needed. Beds with shrubs, rocks or irregular edges are also harder to measure precisely.
Handling a non-rectangular project
Sketch large landscape beds as rectangles, circles or narrow strips and calculate each piece. If some beds only need a top-up, use a shallower depth for those sections rather than averaging the entire yard.
Mistakes worth checking
- Using inches as feet when entering depth
- Adding a full new depth on top of an existing mulch layer
- Ignoring narrow strips along foundations or fences
- Converting to bags without checking the bag’s cubic-foot volume
Mulch Calculator FAQ
What depth should I use?
Use the depth appropriate for your landscape plan and material.
Why enter bag volume?
Bag sizes vary, so use the package label.
Can I use this for irregular beds?
Break irregular beds into simpler shapes and add their areas.
Mulch ordering notes
For bulk mulch, compare the calculated cubic yards with the supplier’s delivery minimum. For bagged mulch, convert the total volume using the exact bag size and round to full bags. A light refresh and a first-time installation usually need different depths.
Use the calculator result as a planning quantity, then compare it with the packaging, minimum order, delivery rules and technical data for the exact mulch you intend to use. Where drawings, codes or manufacturer instructions conflict with a general estimate, follow the project-specific requirement.
Before placing the order
- Recheck the final measured dimensions after the project scope is fixed.
- Confirm bed area, finished depth and bag volume.
- Convert the calculated requirement into the supplier’s actual selling units and round up only where whole units are required.
- Keep labor, delivery, tax, equipment and site-specific requirements separate unless the calculator explicitly includes them.
How to use this mulch estimate in a real project
Estimate landscape mulch in cubic yards from bed area and target depth, then adjust for existing mulch and plant coverage.
Worked planning check: 600 ft² bed at 2 in deep
600 × (2/12) = 100 ft³. Divide by 27 = 3.70 yd³ before rounding to the supplier’s selling increment.
What to verify before you buy
- Measure the project after the layout is fixed, not from an early sketch.
- Replace every default value with the specification, package coverage or local quote for the exact material you will use.
- Round to whole bags, boards, sheets, bundles or cartons only at the final purchasing step.
- Keep delivery, tax, labor, equipment, permits and structural/code requirements separate unless a calculator field explicitly includes them.
