Net surface area is increased by waste and divided by the coverage printed on the package.

packages = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ package coverage

R-value, cavity depth and code requirements are separate from quantity.

Insulation planning guide

Insulation planning should match the measured cavity area with the product type, width, thickness and package coverage required for the assembly. Framing spacing, obstructions and local energy-code requirements matter, so use the area estimate for shopping and verify R-value and installation requirements for your location and project.

Turning the estimate into an order

Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into whole bags, rolls or batts based on package coverage. Before ordering, verify cavity dimensions, target R-value, product thickness and package coverage. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.

What changes the field quantity

Framing spacing, odd cavities, headers and mechanical obstructions create cuts and leftovers. Blown insulation also depends on installed thickness and the manufacturer’s bag chart.

Handling a non-rectangular project

Separate walls, floors and attic areas because they may use different products and R-values. For batts, count unusual framing zones separately; for blown products, use the coverage chart at the target R-value.
