Gravel is usually planned by volume and then converted to weight using an assumed material density. Stone type, moisture, compaction and supplier gradation can change actual tons required, so measure the finished depth carefully and confirm the supplier’s recommended conversion and delivery increment before ordering.

Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into tons or cubic yards in the supplier’s selling unit. Before ordering, verify compacted depth, material density and whether the quoted quantity is loose or compacted. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.
What changes the field quantity
Gravel density changes with stone type, gradation and moisture. The placed depth can also shrink after compaction, particularly in base courses.
Handling a non-rectangular project
Split drives and paths into sections with similar width and depth. Calculate widened parking areas separately, then apply the supplier’s density or conversion factor to the combined volume.
