How fence materials are estimated

A straight fence run is divided by panel width and rounded up. A basic run uses one more post than panels.

panels = fence length ÷ panel width

Gates, corners and terrain can change requirements.

Fence planning guide

A fence-material estimate begins with the measured fence line and planned post spacing, but gates, corners and end posts need separate attention. Mark the layout on site, count each change in direction and opening, then compare the estimate with the dimensions and installation method of the chosen fence system.

Turning the estimate into an order

Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into whole panels, posts and rails that match the selected fence system. Before ordering, verify run length, post spacing, panel width, corners and gate openings. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.

What changes the field quantity

The same total length can require different post counts depending on corners, ends, gates and maximum panel spans. Prefabricated panels also constrain spacing more than site-built fences.

Handling a non-rectangular project

Break the layout at every corner, gate and change in fence type. Estimate each straight run, then count terminal and gate posts explicitly instead of relying only on length divided by spacing.

Mark post locations on a simple plan before ordering. The calculator can estimate the repeating field materials, but gate assemblies, corner posts, braces and slope transitions should be counted from the actual layout.

Use the calculator result as a planning quantity, then compare it with the packaging, minimum order, delivery rules and technical data for the exact fence materials you intend to use. Where drawings, codes or manufacturer instructions conflict with a general estimate, follow the project-specific requirement.

How to use this fence estimate in a real project

Estimate posts, rails and pickets from total run length and spacing, then adjust for gates, corners and terrain.

Post spacingLay out end, corner and gate posts first; the remaining run can then be divided into practical sections.
Gate openingsGates change post loads, hardware and panel count. Treat each gate as its own assembly.
Sloped groundStepped or racked panels change cut patterns and may add material.
Post holesHole diameter/depth and concrete quantity depend on soil, frost conditions, post size and local requirements.

Worked planning check: 96 ft run with 8 ft nominal sections

96 ÷ 8 = 12 sections, which normally requires 13 line/end positions before accounting for corners or gates. Real layouts should be staked so section widths can be balanced.
