How deck boards are estimated
The deck width is divided by the installed board module (board width plus gap). Runs are multiplied by deck length and waste, then divided by stock board length.

Turning the estimate into an order
Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into whole boards in available stock lengths. Before ordering, verify actual board width, gap, board direction and stocked lengths. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.
What changes the field quantity
Theoretical row counts do not capture butt-joint placement, picture framing, breaker boards, stairs or unusable cutoffs. Composite products may also have installation rules that affect layout.
Handling a non-rectangular project
Split the deck into rectangular fields based on board direction. Treat picture-frame borders, stairs and breaker boards as separate linear-foot takeoffs before choosing stock lengths.
