How decking is estimated

The calculator estimates board runs across the deck width using board face width plus the selected gap, then converts those runs to linear feet and full boards.

What changes the field quantity

Joist direction determines board direction, and design choices such as borders, diagonal installation or breaker boards can increase both linear footage and cut waste.

Handling a non-rectangular project

Lay out each deck rectangle in the direction the boards will run. Calculate borders, stairs and diagonal fields separately, because they use material differently from the main field.
