What is a board foot?
A board foot is a volume measure equal to a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long.
Board-foot measurement is different from linear feet and square feet.

Board-foot estimates are most useful when you keep nominal board names separate from the actual thickness, width and length being purchased. Lumber is sold in different dimensions and lengths, and defects, trimming and project cut lists affect usable yield, so compare the estimate with the stock available at your lumberyard.
Turning the estimate into an order
Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into boards or pieces by the supplier’s stocked dimensions. Before ordering, verify actual thickness, width, length, grade and whether pricing is per board foot or per piece. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.
What changes the field quantity
Rough, surfaced and nominal dimensions are not interchangeable. Moisture, defects and required cut lengths can also reduce the usable yield from a board.
Handling a non-rectangular project
Build a cut list by part size, then group parts that can come from the same stock length. Calculate board feet for the stock you will actually purchase, not only for the finished pieces.
Mistakes worth checking

Board feet describe volume, but they do not replace a cut list. For furniture, trim or framing packages, decide the stock thickness and lengths first, then compare the calculator result with the number of purchasable boards needed to produce the parts.

Where drawings, codes or manufacturer instructions conflict with a general estimate, follow the project-specific requirement.

- Confirm actual thickness, width, length, grade and whether pricing is per board foot or per piece.
