How concrete block quantity is estimated
Wall area is divided by the nominal face area of one masonry unit, then waste is added.
Bond beams, lintels, corners and specialty units should be planned separately.

Turning the estimate into an order
Calculate the base requirement first, then convert it into whole blocks. Before ordering, verify the actual block face size, joint thickness, wall openings and bond pattern. Round only at the final purchasing step so intermediate rounding does not quietly inflate the estimate.
What changes the field quantity
Nominal block dimensions include the mortar joint. Actual wall layouts also change at corners, bond beams, pilasters and openings, so a pure wall-area division can understate specialty units.
Handling a non-rectangular project
Measure each wall face separately and subtract only openings large enough to materially change the count. Keep corner, half, lintel and bond-beam units as a separate takeoff.

- Dividing by the physical block size instead of the nominal module
- Forgetting corners, returns and bond-beam units
- Subtracting every small penetration from wall area
- Treating broken or cut blocks as reusable full units
