12×12 Concrete Patio: How Much Concrete to Plan

A 12 by 12 patio has a simple footprint, which makes it useful for showing how thickness and waste affect a real order.

1. Measurements used in this example

12 ft × 12 ft = 144 sq ft; evaluate 4 in thickness. Write measurements down before opening a calculator. The purpose of the example is to make every assumption visible so you can replace it with your own project numbers.

2. Work the quantity before the price

Worked arithmetic

144 × (4/12) = 48 ft³. Divide by 27 = 1.78 yd³. With 10% planning allowance, the working quantity is about 1.96 yd³.

These numbers are planning quantities, not a contractor quote or structural design. Site conditions, local code, product specifications and supplier policies can change the final purchase.

3. Turn the result into a purchase plan

Before buying, confirm the finished slab thickness, compacted base, edge thickening, reinforcement plan and local requirements. A supplier quote should be compared on delivered cost, not just price per cubic yard.
