1,000 Sq Ft Flooring Order: Waste Changes the Cart

Flooring is sold by boxes or cartons, so the final purchase is driven by package coverage as well as measured area.

1. Measurements used in this example

Measured floor: 1,000 sq ft; compare 5%, 8% and 10% waste. Write measurements down before opening a calculator. The purpose of the example is to make every assumption visible so you can replace it with your own project numbers.

2. Work the quantity before the price

Worked arithmetic

At 5%: 1,050 sq ft. At 8%: 1,080 sq ft. At 10%: 1,100 sq ft. Divide the selected quantity by coverage per box and round up to a whole box.

These numbers are planning quantities, not a contractor quote or structural design. Site conditions, local code, product specifications and supplier policies can change the final purchase.

3. Turn the result into a purchase plan

Confirm product lot/color strategy, transitions, underlayment, moisture barrier, trim and return policy before ordering. Complex layouts can create more offcuts.
